A new technology promises to make detection of food pathogens easier and quicker. The new method could also one day provide homeland protection officials with a better, faster means of inspecting imported food.
- Imagine having a handheld device able to detect different types of bacteria on food, whether that food is in your kitchen, a store, a restaurant or virtually anywhere.
- Current techniques to detect the bacteria take days of testing in labs, but the new device aims to collect and detect the pathogen on location within three to four hours. This early and rapid detection can avoid the cross contamination of ready-to-eat food products.
- The team said the smart material can be a stand-alone label or incorporated with existing packaging materials. The project involves developing and combining the stimuli-responsive polymer that makes up the smart material, the biological detection system and food microbiology.
